Do You Need a Vignette for Hungary?

Mandatory

Yes. If you’re driving a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes on a Hungarian motorway (autópálya) or road marked with an "M", you need a valid digital vignette (e-Matrica) before entering the toll section. Hungary uses the KSZR system—a fully automated camera network that reads licence plates at every motorway entry point and at regular intervals along the road. There are no toll booths, no barriers, and no manual checks along the way.

During a recent trip, we observed KSZR camera gantries on the M1, M4, M5, M43, and M85, often positioned immediately after border crossings. Officially, there is a 60-minute grace period after entering a toll road to purchase a vignette. In practice, however, we’ve seen drivers fined well within that window.

Our advice is simple: don’t rely on it. Buy your vignette before you cross the border into Hungary.

Vehicles That Require an e-Matrica

The following vehicles must have a valid vignette:
  • check_circlePassenger vehicles with maximum 7 seats and up to 3.5t (category D1)
  • check_circleMotorcycles (category D1M) — unlike in some countries, motorcycles are not exempt in Hungary
  • check_circleVans and light commercial vehicles up to 3.5t (D2)
  • check_circleMotorhomes up to 3.5t — from 1 January 2026, motorhomes over 3.5t (which previously required a transponder) are included in this. Additional roads are also newly subject to tolls for this heavier category.
  • check_circleRental vehicles — the vignette is linked to the licence plate, not the driver
  • check_circleTrailers towed by D2 vehicles must have a separate U-category e-Matrica registered to the trailer’s licence plate

Once purchased, your licence plate is registered almost instantly in the Nemzeti Útdíjfizetési Zrt. (NÚSz) national toll database. KSZR cameras verify your registration in real time, so there’s nothing to display or carry in the vehicle.

For motorhomes, the category depends on your vehicle's registration:

  • D1: Motorhomes up to 3.5t with a maximum of 7 seats (M1 classification).
  • D2: Motorhomes exceeding 3.5t or those with more than 7 seats (regardless of weight).

Check section "J" of your vehicle registration document to confirm the correct category before purchasing your vignette.

Where Does the Czech Highway Vignette Apply?

If you plan to drive on Czech roads, be aware that the official e-vignette is required on all motorways (marked "D" for Dálnice) and former expressways. The network connects Prague with all major cities and international border crossings; so a vignette is required to drive to the city. Without a valid e-vignette, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras will flag your vehicle as non compliant.

Toll-Free Sections

Certain D-road sections—such as the D0 Prague ring and the D1 exits 182-210 near Brno—do not require a vignette. These sections are clearly marked with signs reading "BEZ POPLATKU" (without toll) or with a crossed-out vignette symbol.

At the Rozvadov and Petrovice border crossings, the initial section of motorway leading to the nearest service area is also toll-free. This gives drivers the opportunity to purchase a vignette at a kiosk if needed.

However, once you continue onto the main motorway network, a valid Czech vignette is required. If you’re unsure, it’s safer to purchase your vignette in advance to ensure you’re covered for your entire journey.

"During our 31 January test drive, we found the kiosk at the Schirnding–Cheb border crossing closed, with no replacement sign posted. We recommend that you buy your vignette online before crossing to avoid unnecessary fines."

Driving Without a Valid Vignette

The Czech authorities use automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) across the entire motorway network. Camera gantries are positioned at border crossings and throughout the motorway corridors, checking registration numbers against the national database in real time. Please be aware that there is no grace period. Enforcement begins the moment you enter a toll section. Police officers also use mobile scanning devices and perform regular checks at petrol stations and rest areas.

gavel How Enforcement Works

  • videocamFines can be issued on the spot by the traffic police.
  • local_policeEach scan by an automatic camera gantry counts as a separate offence.
  • publicFines are sent internationally to your registered address.
  • warningStandard violation: 5,000–20,000 CZK (€200–€800) per Czech Road Act §42a.
  • warningCZK 100,000 for exemption abuse and CZK 5,000 for registration failures.

Foreign drivers are not exempt. Czech authorities cooperate with EU and non-EU countries to collect unpaid fines. All fines issued will follow you home.

Why Buy Online Instead of at the Border?

Skip the queue at the border crossing or petrol station. Your Czech e-vignette is delivered instantly by email — even last-minute before your trip — and verifiable online anytime at edalnice.cz. Pay by PayPal, credit card, or bank transfer.

Border kiosks are not always a reliable alternative. During our 31 January test drive, we found the kiosk at the Schirnding–Cheb border crossing closed, with no replacement sign posted. We recommend that you buy your vignette online before crossing to avoid unnecessary fines.

Why Trust Us?

We don’t just sell vignettes. We drive the roads ourselves.

Between December 2025 and March 2026, our founder Mattijs Wijnmalen and Prague-based photographer Ujjwal Verma drove more than 2,000 kilometres across Czech motorways, covering the D5, D6, D7, and D8 roads, among others, to see exactly how the system works in practice.

We tested the official vending machines in Prague, documented active camera enforcement at border crossings, and discovered that the sales kiosk at Schirnding–Cheb no longer exists, despite still appearing on some maps.

With more than ten years of European toll system experience and 50,000+ vignettes registered for international drivers, our guidance is based on real field research—not recycled content.

Our fine guarantee also protects you if any registration error on our part results in a penalty.
